In 1528 Cabeza de Vaca was shipwrecked off the Texas coast. He and three other survivors became the first Europeans to explore the American Southwest.

The first mission and Pueblo in Texas, was established by Antonio de Otermín and Fray Francisco de Ayeta in 1682 and was maintained by Franciscan's for Christianizing the Tigua Indians.

La Salle, established a French settlement on the Texas coast in summer 1685, the result of faulty geography that caused him to believe the Mississippi River emptied into the Gulf of Mexico in the Texas coastal bend.

 In 1718, San Antonio was established as a Spanish military post, originally called the Mission San Antonio, and later dubbed the Alamo.

Mission San Jose is completed in San Antonio and other missions where built.

 Father Hidalgo’s speech encouraged Mexicans, Texans, and others to fight for independence.  September 16, 1810, became the official date to recognize the day of Mexican independence.  The town of his parish was renamed Dolores Hidalgo which was created in 1869,  in his honor.
