This was the first mission and pueblo in Texas was made by Antonio de Otermín and Fray Francisco de Ayeta in 1682 and was kept by Franciscans for Christianizing the Tigua Indians, who gave them company, Otermín on his retreat to the El Paso area after his attempt to recover New Mexico in the winter of 1681–82. To the Tiguas, the mission church is known as San Antonio, after their patron saint, and they call the pueblo Ysleta del Sur. The site was also known by the Spaniards as Corpus Christi de la Isleta. The present church was constructed in 1851.

Texas missions, San José was known as a social and cultural center. It became known as the Queen of the Missions. Its complex of stone walls, bastions, granary, and church was completed by 1782.

Mexican War of Independence from 1810–1821, Texas was confused. Governor Manue de Salcedo was overthrown by rebels in 1810, but convinced his jailer to let him go and assist him in organizing a counter coup. Three years later, the Republican Army of the North, consisting primarily of Indians and Americans, again overthrew the Texas government and executed Salcedo.
