1519 Pineda maps Texas

Alonso Álvarez de Pineda commanded a Spanish expedition that sailed along the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Cabo Rojo, Mexico, in 1519.

1527 Cabeza de Vaca reports Texas

Timeline Image

In 1527 Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was appointed second in command of an expedition headed up by Panfilo de Narváez, who wanted to claim the territory from Florida to Mexico for Spain.

Corpus Christi de la isleta, the first mission and pueblo in Texas, was established by Antonio de Otermin and Fray Fransisco de Ayeta in 1682 and was maintained by Franciscans for Christianizing the Tigua Indians.

1685 La Selle establishes Fort St. Louis

René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Selle, established a French settlement on the Texas coast in summer 1685, the result of faulty geography that caused him to believe the Mississippi River emptied into the Gulf of Mexico in the Texas coastal bend.

1731 East Texas missions are moved to San Antonio

The Spanish mission was a frontier institution that sought to incorporate indigenous people into the Spanish colonial empire, its Catholic religion, and certain aspects of its Hispanic culture through the formal establishment or recognition of sedentary Indian communities entrusted to the tutelage of missionaries under the protection and control of the Spanish state.

San Jose was the largest of the missions in the area, the community contained about 350 Indian neophytes, sustained by extensive fields and herds of live stock. Viewed as the model among the Texas missions, San Jose gained a reputation as a major social and cultural center.

The intriguing notion that he might personally lead an armed uprising against the viceregal government of New Spain apparently struck Father Miguel Hildago y Costilla sometime in 1809 as he was attending a meeting of a provincial literary club.

After considerable delay, Olivarez and Alarcón traveled separately to San Antonio in the spring of 1718.
