1728 - The Boston Gazette advertised private correspondence courses

1852 - "The Pitman Shorthand Training Program" was created. The first students, who were female at that time, utilized the United States Postal Service for coursework and correspondence to become secretaries

1873 - "The Society to Encourage Studies At Home" was founded as the first correspondence schools in the U.S.

1963 - The "Instructional Television Fixed Service" (ITFS) was developed by the FCC. Twenty television stations were available for educational institutions, which allowed for more distance education opportunities

1978 - Computers began to be utilized for distance education. Satellite communication also increased up through the 1980's
