A timeline is a way of displaying a list of events in chronological order. A timeline can be a great way to capture your family history, a special trip, a historical event, future plans, or anything that you are passionate about. Events in a timeline can contain a title, description, picture, video, and links to external pages.
You may create up to 100 timelines with a standard Panda Timelines account. Please contact us if you need additional space.
You may print a timeline using the print feature in your web browser. We are investigating options for providing an advanced print feature on the site to provide improved layout and print options.
A timeline can currently have a maximum of 500 events. The download time and rendering in a web browser will be affected by the amount of text and images included in the timeline. Mobile browsers will typically be slower loading large timelines than desktop browsers. The actual number of events that are practical will depend on these factors.
After you have created a timeline entry move the mouse over the entry and click the “Add Image or Video” button. On the popup box click inside the “Click Here to Upload Image”. Select an image from your picture collection and then press the “Save” button.
You may include a YouTube video in a timeline event by first clicking the “Share” box on the YouTube page with the video and then click the “Embed” tab. Copy the embed link that is shown. Here is an example:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HSzx-zryEgM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
While editing your timeline, move your mouse over the timeline entry you wish to add the video to and click “Add Image or Video”. Paste the embed link you copied from YouTube into the “video” field and press the save button.
You may insert a link to an external web page into a timeline entry. Move the mouse over a timeline entry and click the “Change Event Details” button. Paste the web page URL into the “Read More Link” field at the bottom of the Timeline Event popup and press the “Save” button.
A timeline can be viewed in either a single or double column format. The double column view is only available on wide displays and provides an alternative to the single row format. On wide displays, the view can be toggled by clicking the “Single Column” and “Double Column” button that appears at the bottom of the timeline.
A timeline author can set the default timeline view in the “Display Settings” while editing a timeline. For example, the author can choose to have the timeline display in single column mode even when on a wide display. The author can also control whether the viewer is allowed to change the default view.
Yes, a time of day can be set on a timeline entry by clicking on the “Time” field at the top of the Timeline Event popup. Type a time such as “12:30PM” or “5:00AM” in the field. The time will be displayed along with the date for the timeline entry. You may remove the time by deleting the value from the “Time” field.
Yes, a timeline can be configured to display the newest events at the top of the timeline. While editing the timeline, click “Display Settings” and then change the “Order of Timeline Events” setting to “Reverse”.
A banner image will enhance the look of your timeline. For best results, we recommend images that are 770 pixels wide and at least 350 pixels tall. The banner will show the top 200 to 350 pixels of the image, depending on the width of the browser window. You may click on the “pencil” icon on the “Banner Image” editing page to crop your image into a wider layout.
Panda Timelines does not current support uploading custom timeline icons.
Panda Timelines offers two types of timelines to provide the most flexibility when it comes to dates. When you create a timeline, you may choose between a 'Standard Timeline' and 'Free Form Timeline'.
Standard Timelines supports dates between January 1, 0001 and December 31, 9999 in the Gregorian calendar. This type of timeline is perfect for personal histories, special events, modern history, or anything that has happened in the past 2000 years.
If you need a wider range of dates or a different calendar system, then the “Free Form Timeline” is for you. This timeline allows you to manually set the order of events and use any date you wish as part of the event title. Free Form Timelines are ideal for prehistoric, geological, cosmic, or religious dates. They are also a great choice for fictional dates (e.g., Middle-Earth, Star Wars, etc.).
Sharing and Embedding
You may share your timeline by clicking the "Share Facebook" or "Share Twitter" options on the Share menu at the top of your timeline. For sharing in email or on forums, simply copy the timeline web address from the address bar at the top of your web browser and then paste into the email or forums message.
Who can view your timeline depends on the timeline privacy setting. The privacy setting for a timeline is set at creation time and can be changed by clicking on “Privacy Settings” on the timeline edit page.
A timeline set to “Public” can be viewed by everyone. You may password protect your timeline by setting the privacy to “Password”. In this mode, you must share the password you have set with those you wish to view the timeline. Lastly, you may set the privacy mode to “private” to restrict viewing the timeline to only when signed into your Panda Timelines account.
Support to embed your timeline in your own web page is coming soon. Please check back here or on the support forums for updates.
